Operating Principles

The Prion Institute is guided by the following principles:

  • Excellence
The Prion Institute will pursue only progressive and innovative research by highly qualified people identified through a rigorous peer review process to ensure the highest standards of international research excellence are met. The Institute's International Research Advisory Council will be involved in this process.
  • Pan-Alberta
The Prion Institute will include participants from public and private organizations across the province who have the ability to meaningfully contribute to innovative research. These participants will or may include Alberta's three major research universities, Alberta colleges and technical institutes, government research organizations, other research institutes, and Alberta industry leaders, companies, and associations.
  • Collaborative
The Prion Institute will enable and nurture mutually supportive collaborations between and among science and engineering researchers and industry leaders. Success will be built on establishing and sustaining provincial, national and international research collaborations and developing effective industry partnerships.
  • Integrated and Focused
The Prion Institute will support research and innovation spanning the spectrum from knowledge creation to the translation of that knowledge into viable products, services, and public policies. The Prion Institute will support researchers and innovators at all career levels—from world-class senior researchers to bright and talented research trainees, from those conducting industrial research and development to business interns, and from experienced business professionals to early entrepreneurs—with the goal of producing new discoveries, new technologies and new jobs for Albertans.
  • Industry Partnerships
The Prion Institute will seek input, participation, and funding support from industry partners located in Alberta or those collaborating with Alberta investigators to develop new processes, technologies, intellectual property and innovation, in order to identify areas that will further build and strengthen Alberta's economy.
  • Policy Development
The Prion Institute will contribute to the creation of public policy, response plans and practices informed by world-class research.
  • Global Context
The Prion Institute will work towards strong and meaningful collaborations beyond Alberta's borders—nationally and globally—to understand and benefit from expanding global progress and cutting-edge expertise.
