Expected Outcomes
The Alberta Prion Research Institute is committed to the prevention, mitigation and
treatment of BSE and associated diseases and developing the capacity to address similar issues in related diseases in animals and humans.
The Prion
Institute focuses on the following outcomes:
- Understanding the nature and process of protein misfolding that generates the infectious form of
the bovine prion, plus an understanding of its normal cellular function.
- Understanding the pathogenic process for BSE, TSEs and other human diseases
related to protein misfolding.
- Understanding the genetics of susceptibility and resistance to BSE, with inferences for genetic modification to
eliminate the pathological properties of this molecule.
- Identifying and implementing innovative diagnostic tests for BSE and related conditions that
can be performed on live animals and have application to human diseases.
- Understanding how prions are spread through natural and farm ecosystems, and
developing effective approaches/technologies for deactivation and decontamination.
- Developing best practices and procedures to contain the risks
associated with TSEs.
- Developing knowledge necessary for adopting procedures that will enable Alberta to continue to exceed international trade
standards for beef and related food products.
- Informing public policy in food safety and other health outcomes through research into diseases related
to prions and protein folding.
- Maintaining public awareness and confidence in the initiative and its outcomes, and evaluating the attendant social
and economic impacts.
- Organizing networking events for the industry and research community engaged in this topic, in order to develop global profile
and national/international opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
