The Prion Institute Scholar designation is a recruitment strategy to attract internationally renowned researchers to Alberta to investigate Prion issues. This initiative supports top researchers who are leaders in their fields, and who demonstrate a commitment to scientific excellence and the ability to recruit other research talent to the province. Though salary awards are not attached to the program, Scholars are given the opportunity to apply off cycle for support from Prion Institute programs.
The Alberta Prion Research Institute has a mandate to support the building of excellence in research on BSE and related diseases in Alberta. The Recruitment Salary Support Program is intended to assist Alberta universities in recruiting to Alberta high caliber investigators whose research is within the mandate of the Institute. The program aims to increase the capacity for excellent prion research at Alberta institutions. The Prion Institute Recruitment Salary Support Program allows Academic Institutions in the Province of Alberta to seek salary support for new independent investigators who will conduct prion research in Alberta. Funding from APRI will supplement that provided by institutions and other partners will be considered to be incremental to the overall funding developed by the recruiting academic institutions. Institutions may nominate potential new appointees who have demonstrated a commitment to scientific excellence. Eligible nominees may be of any academic rank and must be eligible for tenure at the nominating institution. Nominees will not have accepted an appointment at the time of the nomination to APRI. Nominees must intend to carry out research in an area within the mandate of APRI. The Institution must indicate how the individual's requirements for teaching, or clinical service, or both, will be at a level which will allow a majority of the person's time to be available for prion research during the period of the salary award. Institutions also must demonstrate that there is sufficient start-up support and infrastructure for the candidate to initiate research at the start of their appointment. The Prion Institute will provide contributions of up to one third of the total of salary plus benefits for these exceptional researchers. Funding will be to a maximum of $50,000/year for a maximum of three years, and will be paid directly to the academic institution. The term of any salary award will be proportionally adjusted to coincide with the end of APRI’s current mandate (in 2011). The recruitment program will provide a maximum of $150,000 for salary support to the academic institution over three years to support researchers who qualify under the program. The investigator must take up a tenure stream position in the nominating institution within one year of the notification of award by APRI. The recruit must receive confirmation of peer reviewed funding for operating costs of research in an area within APRIs mandate within the first two years of APRI salary support to be eligible for the third year of her or his salary award.
