Proof of Principle Program
This funding stream is intended to allow young investigators and established
researchers from other disciplines to enter the field of prion research and supports new approaches into prion research. It will build Alberta's research
capacity and ability to address the desired outcomes according
to the principles of the Prion Institute.
Proof of
Principle (PoP) projects are expected to:
- Further the objectives of one or more of the theme areas addressing one or more of the desired outcomes of the Prion Institute.
- Provide an effective entry point into prion-related research and to build Alberta's capacity in relevant areas.
- Be led by an Alberta-
based researcher involving, where appropriate, researchers and facilities elsewhere in Canada and around the globe.
- Demonstrate that the project is
innovative and does not duplicate research being carried out elsewhere nationally or internationally.
- Support the TSE and Society theme wherever
possible.
- Include a training component for graduate students or post-doctoral fellows that will help build the pool of researchers working on prions
and related diseases in Canada.
- Develop appropriate partnerships and linkages nationally and internationally.
Examples of possible
research projects:
- Training researchers in laboratories with established expertise in innovative prion research
- Application of novel
investigative imaging and diagnostic technologies (for example, nanotechnologies, lab-on-a-chip, biomarkers) to detect TSEs and other diseases with related
pathology
- Developing prototypes for antemortem testing
- Development of novel risk assessment methodologies
PoP projects
should NOT be used:
Eligibility
Researchers must be affiliated with an Alberta post-secondary institution or research organization. The strength of proposals may be enhanced by meaningful
collaboration among universities, colleges, industry and policy makers. Applications from individuals or small teams are preferred for Proof of Principle
projects.
Budget
Proof of principle projects may be funded up to a maximum level of $100,000 per year, for a maximum of two years. However,
funding below this limit may be approved. Budgets for full applications must be carefully documented and clearly justified. Although there is no requirement for
matching funds, proof-of-principle projects may be complemented with funds raised from other sources. Prion Institute funds may be used for stipends for
trainees, research operating costs, equipment, costs related to national and international collaborations, allowable travel costs, and other reasonable
expenditures as required to carry out the project. Project expenses must be consistent with the Tri-Council policy on the use of research grant funding,
available at www.nserc.gc.ca.
